Walkthrough

Wandering in the Dark is a main quest in VelenKeira Metz and Geralt are investigating an elvish ruin in hopes of finding a clue about Ciri.

When you arrive outside the cave, meditate really quick to gain all health and potions back. It is recommended to have Swallow and Cat potions to help with health and seeing in the dark. If you don’t have those, have plenty of food and a torch. When you are all set, head inside.

The Wild Hunt is here too, no doubt looking for Ciri. Keira will try to teleport you both across the way, but something goes wrong. If you follow her into the portal, you will be sent into another room with Drowners. Defeat them and swim back to the main chamber. Ignoring the portal will cause it to vanish. Fight the Drowners here, then search for Keira. Use your Witcher Sense to spot where she is screaming. It’s just up nearby stairs into another room.

Kill the rats and their nests with a few quick casts of the Igni sign. Continue on into the next room where a projection of the elf mentions following the sign of Ciri’s sword, Swallow (not to be confused with the potion). Keep that in mind as you go into the next room. In this wide open room are wraiths and toxic gas. If you have a torch equipped to see better, remove it. The flame will ignite the gas and do serious damage to you. Use Igni to temporarily get rid of the gas from a safe distance. If the wraiths are in the gas when it explodes, it will do serious damage. Pick the wraiths off one by one until the room is clear.

With the wraiths gone, head down a nearby tunnel. A picture of a swallow on the wall, which can easily be seen with your Witcher Senses, will tell you that you’re on the right path. At the end of the tunnel is a room with an octagon well in the middle. Talk to the projection, which says to take the least obvious path and to follow signs related to Ciri’s horse . Ignore the signs on the wall. One summons clones of Geralt and Keira that you must fight. The other explodes. Instead, jump into the well. You will easily spot a painting of a horse. Interact with it then dive. Swim along into another chamber. Interact with another painting of a horse and climb out. The two images opened a hidden door. Interact with the swallow sign to open a portal. Go inside.

On the other side of the portal is a Golem. The Golem is easy to fight with Keira. Use a Thunderbolt potion and wail on it. Dodge and roll behind it to stay out of its primary focus. It’ll be down in no time. Climb up the stairs behind the Golem and continue onward. You’ll come into another room with a swallow sign. Activate it for another portal. Before going through, meditate to gain your health back. You’ll want all your health for the next portion.

Go through the portal to finally catch up with the Wild Hunt. Not interested in fighting you directly (yet) the Wild Hunt summons the White Frost, aka a deadly blizzard. This fight involves tight quarters combat. Keira creates a shield from the biting cold. As long as you are in the shield, the wind will do you no harm. Follow her as she walks from portal to portal. At each portal, six Hounds of the Wild Hunt will come to attack. Protect Keira and kill them. Use Igni when you can, along with heavy strikes. Focus on one of the Hounds at a time if you can, with Igni as your crowd control. If the Hounds are outside the portal, wait for them to come in. No need to take damage outside the shield. Kill all three Hounds (nine Hounds in total) that emerge from every ball of frost to stop the White Frost.

Flirting on the Hunt: After the portals are closed, Keira will collapse in Geralt’s arms. The shield and portal stopping drained her. You can flirt by asking her not to faint or show no interest by asking if she can continue. This helps lay a foundation for romance later on. No matter what option you choose, Keira will still go on and follow to help you.

Meditate again and continue. Repair any armor or weapons you need. You are about to fight one of the Wild Hunt. Make sure you have Swallow and Thunderbolt. Both potions will aid in keeping you alive as you are about to take down Nithral.


Boss Battle: Nithral, of the Wild Hunt

Nithral’s fight can be broken into three chunks, just like his health bar. To start, focus on dodging his wide, powerful slashes with his axe. He usually swings two or three times. When there is an opening, dodge to his side of back and hit him with heavy blows. Use Quen to protect yourself from his axe when you are up close. Using Thunderbolt from the get-go is a good idea. Keep an eye on your toxicity levels though!

When the first chunk of his health bar is gone, he’ll go into a protective bubble. Don’t strike at it, you’ll just lose health and be knocked back. Instead, focus on killing the hounds he summons. Protect yourself with Quen, then equip Igni and strike the Hounds with heavy blows to kill them. Just like before. If you are low on health when he enters the bubble, use Swallow. It’s easier to dodge the Hounds and keep the vitality regeneration going.

If you are out of potions, check your inventory for food. Equiping the food will help you regain some health.

When all the Hounds are gone, Nithral will emerge from his bubble. Keep the same strategy of dodge, switching between Quen and Igni, while also using heavy blows to his side and back. When you get his health down to the final chunk, he goes in another bubble. He'll try to regenerate his own health while inside. To get him out, kill the new pack of Hounds. Again, use Swallow if you need to, if your toxicity isn’t too high. When he’s out of the bubble again, wail on him to finish the fight.

Make sure to loot Nithral and the room. If you’re up for it, go back to the entrance of the room and blast an archway with Aard. Inside is a great sword guarded by a Foglet. Kill it and claim the sword. With all your treasures in hand, watch the elf’s final message and talk to Keira. The Masked Elf mentioned the witches of Crookback Bog. Use the tools Keira gives you to destroy the illusions and leave the ruins. On your way out though, Keira asks for you help to find a magic lamp. This opens the side questMagic Lamp.” It’s short and easy, not to mention in this location. You can only do this quest now. If you pass it up, Keira will do it by herself.

When you finally exit the ruins, the main quest “Ladies of the Wood” becomes available. Keira will also invite you over. Whenever you go back, all her side quests open up. You can do all those after “Ladies of the Wood.”
